Ehmedê Xanî

Born in 1650, Xanî was one of the first Kurdish linguists to publish work in his native language.

Seen as the father of Kurdish nationalism, publishing many poems and books emphasising Kurdish culture.

This account refers to his story titled Nem and Zîn1693

Social Meaning

This classic love story looks at the struggles of two lovers to be together when faced with the social challenges of clan wars and injustice.

This reflects more than mere tragedy, as the reflection of a lack of unity caused by internal division and external oppression strikes a cord with the Kurds, as if they were united the obstacles would be easy to overcome.

Additionally, the perseverance of the two lovers highlights core attributes of the Kurds, as they pride themselves in being resilient, honourable and heroic, therefore the demonstration of these attributes in the story intends on reigniting these traits in the Kurds, driving them to push through their struggles and unite.

Literary significance

At the time, Arabic and Persian were the dominant languages in the region, with Kurdish seen as unrefined and crude.

As a result of this many authors chose to write in other languages to not attract attention, however some, like Xanî chose to write in Kurdish as an act of social and literary defiance.

Showing that Kurdish was capable of high level prose such as this promoted their identity and culture by justifying its abilities.

Broader meaning

On a larger scale, knowing that the Kurds lacked political recognition and unity to oppose their oppressors, it can be seen how they were forced to challenge them in other ways.

With all aspects of Kurdish identity being attacked, the Kurds were forced to spur unity and bring value to their livelihoods through aspects such as literature, song and tradition.
