Information

Music and song play a large role in Kurdish culture, they are sung and shared amongst communities. Songs help to preserve language and ensure younger generations understand their heritage.

History of Kurdish songs

It wasn't until the late 20th Century that Kurdish songs became as popular as they are now. The act of listening and  Kurdish songs became apart an essential part in the cause towards emancipation and a demonstration of allegiance towards the Kurdish struggle.

During the 1930s Kurdish music and songs began to be aired on the radio traversing state boarders. Later in the 1960s music was used as a means to increase support for Kurdish political resistance.

With the banning of the use of the Kurdish language in the 1980s the act of singing in Kurdish showed the spirit of the Kurdish people in the face of persecution by state authorities.
