Women of Kurdistan

Kurdish women play a significant role within Kurdish communities and culture, with Kurdish mothers being at the forefront of what it means to be Kurdish. Women in Kurdistan have impact their way of life in every aspect.

Dress

Kurdish women's clothes  include vibrant colours as well as craftsmanship often featuring methods such as: embroidery and weaving. 

Their expressive cultural dress can also be showcased during traditional dances e.g dîlan or Halparke. 

 

Music and Culture

Many women also play a large role in Kurdish music, with some of the main Kurdish singers being: Aynur Doğan, Ayşe Şan and Rojda Aykoç. 

 

Women play a strong role within Kurdish families and have been vital in the continuity of preserving the Kurdish language within the home in the face of oppressive language laws. 

 

Kurdish women are also strongly remembered within Kurdish history with many women being prominent leaders within their own field. Whether that be through cultural authority or modern political power.

 

 

 

Women's Liberation 

Traditionally women in Kurdistan have fought for equality as women in the same way that they fight for being Kurdish. AS a result of their struggle, women in Kurdistan enjoy a much more equal society and life than many of their neighbouring countries and cultures. The fight to break patriarchal limits within Kurdistan have been crucial in highlight what is means to be a Kurdish Women: resilient, proud and expressive.

 

The Future 

The Women's Liberation movement continues and shall strive into the future despite obstacles and challanges due to the steadfast women in Kurdistan have played and will continues to play.
